By gently facing and befriending our triggers, we begin to cultivate a strength that can ultimately help us tackle more profound anxieties, such as feelings of inadequacy or fear of rejection. The essence of this process lies in taking those initial small steps—steps that foster self-kindness and acknowledge the importance of gentleness in our healing journey.
I outline three foundational steps to approach our fears, starting with creating proximity without pressure. Using the example of a fear of flying, I encourage listeners to take small, non-threatening actions, like just driving to the airport or sitting in the parking lot observing planes. This method emphasizes building a safe relationship with our fears, recognizing them without judgment, and allowing ourselves the freedom to retreat if needed. The next step involves gradually increasing our exposure by taking more active roles in confronting our fears, ensuring we're in a space where we can feel comfortable and safe while doing so.
